THE COMPANY
Green House Framing is a small, vegan-owned, eco-conscious business, located in Portland, Oregon. To minimize their impact on the environment, they have created an alternative to factory-produced picture frames and mirrors. They are committed to offering a product that is green and free of animal products. This commitment is applied to every aspect of their business. They use only reclaimed lumber, earth friendly glues and stains, tree-free and recycled papers, recycled boxes and shipping materials, energy efficient lighting, and so much more.

THE MATERIALS
Each frame is constructed from reclaimed lumber purchased from a non-profit organization, Second Chance, Inc., in Baltimore. Second Chance, Inc. deconstructs buildings prior to demolition, salvaging lumber and other architectural elements. They also provide job training in carpentry and craftsmanship for low-income city residents. For more information about this organization, please visit their website: www.secondchanceinc.org. In addition, Green House rescues other discarded lumber on its way to the landfill. The "look" of the grain will vary from piece to piece. Most of the lumber is from old floor beams or rafters, which have nail and/or staple holes, and other imperfections. Rather than throw these pieces away, Green House has chosen to incorporate it into their products, believing it adds to the beauty and uniqueness of each frame.
The wood stains are natural oil paints that contain pigments from earth, rock, and minerals. The raw materials are easily renewable, and are obtained by fair trade practices. The finish is low V.O.C. (volatile organic compounds) which is much more gentle on the environment than other manufacturer's products. These stains are also free of any animal products and animal testing. Some colours give the wood a worn/antiqued look, while others offer more coverage. The grain of the wood does not absorb some of the colours readily, which produces a "striped" effect. If using wood that does not have a dramatic contrast with the grain, there will be more colour coverage.

THE PROCESS
Each piece of lumber is milled down, and then cut to size. The frames are assembled using a lap joint (the ends fit together like a puzzle) at the corners to ensure its durability and longevity. The joint is then reinforced with nails and a glue that is biodegradable and vegan. When possible, recycled glass and easel backs are also used.
