THE COMPANY Hankettes was formed in 1996 in Vancouver, BC. As a major allergy sufferer, its founder Lesley Roberts was looking for an alternative to paper tissue, as well as a business she could run from home. The first product she came up with was organic cotton hankies that pull out of a box like standard paper tissue. Over the years the product line has continued to grow, always with the idea of replacing standard disposable products with re-usable organic cotton ones. In 2001, Lesley, her husband Rob, their 2 kids, and the business moved to the countryside of the beautiful Sunshine Coast. The business is now located in a large semi trailer on their co-op acreage. Their philosophy has grown to include the idea of right-livelihood, fair wages and local employment. They make all of their own organic cotton products. All of the cutting, sewing, silk screening, packaging, and shipping is done right in their home by 4 people.
MANUFACTURING Hankettes imports the majority of its fabric from an organic cotton growers' co-operative located in Texas. The rest of it comes from North Carolina. Most of their notions come from a small business in New Mexico. Once the fabric arrives, it is cut, sewn, silk screened, packaged, and shipped right from their semi trailer. Items to be dyed are cut and sewn first, then sent to a friend in their village who dyes them in small batches outside in her yard. Final drying and ironing are done in her kitchen. The Alder wood buttons (used on the shower curtains) are made by her son, with trees from their property. Hankettes offers a very flexible work environment where everyone sets their own hours, and parents are welcome to bring their children. Even dogs sometimes come by. This company offers a vision of what fair and ethical labour can look like in our country and we are proud to support their efforts to create a community in which neighbours participate to bring about a profitable and beneficial enterprise.
